- Word Mac 2016 Restore Files When Reopening Application
Found this on a google search so no guarantee it works:
Apr 16, 2018 To display this folder in Mac OS X Lion, hold down the OPTION key while you click the Go menu. Open Preferences. Look for a file that is named com.microsoft.word.plist, and move the file to the desktop. Start Word, and check whether the problem still occurs. Return to MS Word, click File, then Open, then scroll to the bottom of the recent documents list and click Recover Unsaved Documents. Paste the copied file into the folder that pops up and open the file to recover.
Switch to the Finder application and choose 'Find' from the File menu. Click on 'This Mac' in the Search bar, then select 'Kind' is 'Document.' Choose 'As list' from the View menu. Then choose 'Arrange by last modified' from the View menu. This will show you all of the documents that have been saved to your hard drive in newest-to-oldest order. Scroll down in the window and review these file names to see if there are any documents with names including 'temporary' or 'untitled,' and with kinds that are word processing documents or plain text files. There will be many documents here, so use the date and time on each file to help narrow your search.
Drag these documents to the Pages icon in your Dock. They will open in Pages if they are saved word processing documents, and you may be able to retrieve the text of your lost document from these files. If a file cannot be opened in Pages, try dragging it to the TextEdit icon in your Dock instead.

Use the setting in the log out or restart dialog
When you log out of your Mac or restart it, deselect ”Reopen windows when logging back in” when prompted.
Or start up in safe mode, then restart normally. This doesn't change the setting, but your Mac forgets any windows that were open the last time you logged out or restarted.
If you deselect this setting and an app continues to open automatically:
- The app might be a login item. You can add or remove login items in Users & Groups preferences.
- The app might have installed its own startup software. Often this is controlled by a setting within the app. Check the app's preferences or documentation, or contact the app's developer.
Use the setting in General preferences

To prevent apps from remembering the windows they had open, choose Apple menu > System Preferences, click General, then select ”Close windows when quitting an app.”
Or press and hold the Shift key while opening an app. This doesn't change the setting, but the app forgets any windows that were open the last time you quit the app.

If these steps don't work for an app, the app might have its own setting for reopening windows. Check the app's preferences or documentation, or contact the app's developer.
